One of the most frequently asked questions from women who color their hair is not just what is the right color, but what is the right tone? When choosing your hair color, consider your skin tone and not just your hair color of preference. For example, skin with a pinkish tone looks great with cool highlights (beige, neutral, or ash). These tones will help reduce the appearance of redness in the skin. Olive skin is complimentary to warmer tones, such as red or golden highlights, because olive skin has a slightly greenish tint to it (which the warmer tones tend to counteract). Rich brunette hair is great for contrast. It whitens and brightens the skin, making it look more clear and porcelain. On the other hand, hair that is too dark against skin that is light yellow or olive, can make the complexion look harsh and washed out.
The science of color is highly nuanced and subjective, so I recommend holding color swatches next to the skin (as we typically do at our salons during color consultations) when making a decision on what’s best for you.
